About Professor Michael Solomons
Professor Michael Solomons is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with a practice dedicated to the subspecialty of Hand, Wrist and Peripheral nerve surgery.
I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon by training with a dedicated interest in Hand, Wrist and Peripheral Nerve Conditions. I am one of the very few Private Hand Surgeons in the country with a strong link to Academic Medicine. Hence my recent promotion to Associate Professorship at the University of Cape Town. This country desperately needs Doctors and Doctors desperately need to know about Hand Problems which can make up 25% of their future case load. Sports injuries, Work injuries and Degenerative conditions of the Hand and Wrist are very common and successful management of these is the difference between restoring quality of life and denying someone the return to work or play. As the Head of the Martin Singer Hand Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital for 18 years, I have lectured countless students, taught and supervised more than 50 registrars in training and have had Fellows from all corners of the Globe come and spend time to learn from us. The baton of information and the ethos of Hand Surgery as passed by Mr Martin Singer, one of the Giants of Hand Surgery and awarded an International Pioneer in Hand Surgery in 1994, has now found its way into my hands and it is my responsibility to ensure that this ideology and High Standard is disseminated nationally and internationally to ensure the care of the Hand Injured in Our Society.
“There is no minor hand surgery, only minor hand surgeons” – Martin Singer 1994
